This design helps in hot, sunny places. The tall crown keeps the head warm. The wide brim provides shade from the sun. Many people wear these hats today. Ranch workers in the United States and Brazil wear them. Musicians and rodeo riders wear them too.

These hats came from many older styles. They were inspired by Mexican hats like the sombrero. In 1865, J. B. Stetson made the first modern version. He called it the "Boss of the Plains."

It was made of soft felt. It was also waterproof.

People can make their hats unique. They can crease the top or roll the brim. Some hats have a decorative band on the outside. Some even have strings to keep them on in the wind. Some people call large hats "ten-gallon" hats. This name might come from a Spanish word for "handsome." In Calgary, Canada, a white hat is a special symbol. It is even on the city flag.
