It uses a cord or a leather string. The ends of the string have metal tips. These tips are called aiguillettes. A pretty metal clasp holds the tie in place.

Many people in the West wear them. Since the mid-20th century, some groups have made silver parts. These include the Hopi, Navajo, Zuni, and Puebloan people.

Bolo ties are very important in some states. Arizona made the bolo tie its official neckwear in 1971. New Mexico also made it its official tie in 2007. Texas named it their official tie in 2007 too.

In the United Kingdom, people call them bootlace ties. They were popular with Teddy Boys in the 1950s. They became fashionable again in the 1980s. Some stars in Hollywood wore them too. Even some sports stars wear them. Philip Rivers, a football player, wore them often in 2013. One man named Victor Cedarstaff says he made the tie in the late 1940s. He even got a patent for his design.
