Shoelaces are strings used to hold shoes on your feet.

They pass through holes called eyelets. You can loosen them to take shoes off. You can tighten them to keep your foot firm.

Most laces have hard tips called aglets. These tips stop the lace from fraying. They also help you push the lace through holes.

Laces come in many styles. Some are round and some are flat. Flat laces often stay tied better. Some laces are elastic. These are great for kids or athletes. You can just slip them on. People also lace shoes in different ways. Straight-bar lacing looks neat on formal shoes.
