Bliss is a very famous photograph of a beautiful landscape.

It shows bright green rolling hills under a blue daytime sky. Wispy cirrus clouds float across the sky above the hills. This image became the default wallpaper for the Windows XP computer system. People around the world recognize it as a symbol of peace and calm. Many believe it is one of the most viewed photos ever made.

Some people even call it a metaphor for natural charm and nostalgia.

Charles O'Rear took this photo in January 1996. He was a photographer for National Geographic. He was driving near the Napa and Sonoma county line in California. He was on his way to visit his girlfriend. He saw the hill and thought the grass was perfect. The hills were green because of winter rains. He used a Mamiya RZ67 camera on a tripod. He also used Fujifilm's Velvia film to make the colors look very bright.

He did not use any computer software to change the photo.

Before the photo was taken, the hill was used for vineyards. A bug called phylloxera forced the farmers to clear the land. This left the hills open and green for O'Rear to find. After he took the shot, he sold it through his agency, Westlight. Westlight was a large stock photo company in the United States. In 1998, a company called Corbis bought Westlight. Corbis was owned by Bill Gates, who helped start Microsoft. This connection helped the photo eventually reach Microsoft.

In the year 2000, Microsoft bought the full rights to the photo. They wanted an image that felt warm and full of possibility. The green grass and blue sky matched their brand colors perfectly. Microsoft paid O'Rear a very large amount of money for the image. It was reported to be in the low six figures. Because the film was so valuable, O'Rear had to fly to Seattle to deliver it. He could not use a regular delivery service because of insurance.

This photo helped make Windows XP a huge success.

Today, the hill has changed back into a vineyard. Photographers have tried to recreate the famous view. An art duo named Goldin+Senneby even made a project called After Microsoft. They photographed the same spot in November 2006. Even though the hill looks different now, the photo stays famous. Microsoft has used the image for many things lately. They made a special holiday sweater and even some Crocs shoes. A small plaque now marks the exact spot where the magic happened.
