Blasphemy is a word for being disrespectful to a god.

It can also mean disrespecting something sacred or holy. This might be through words, writing, or actions. Some people see it as a way to mock what others hold dear. For many, it is a very serious matter.

Different religions have different views on this. In Islam, insulting the prophet Muhammad is seen as blasphemy. In Judaism, speaking a sacred name in a wrong way is a concern. Some Christians believe that insulting the Holy Spirit is a sin that lasts forever.

In the past, many places had laws against it. In England, it was a crime under common law. Some places even used death as a punishment long ago. For example, a man named Thomas Aikenhead was hanged in Scotland in 1697.

Today, many countries have changed their laws. England and Wales stopped their laws in 2008. Ireland did this in 2020. Scotland also stopped its laws in 2021. However, about 40 percent of the world still has laws about it.
