BitTorrent is a special way to share files across the Internet.

Most people download files from one single computer, called a server. This can be very slow if many people want the same thing at once. BitTorrent uses a peer-to-peer system to solve this problem. This means many computers work together as a team to share data. This method is very helpful for sending huge files like videos or music. It is a decentralized way to move information around the world.

To make this work, the system breaks a large file into small parts. These parts are called pieces or segments.

Instead of waiting for one server, your computer asks many different people for different pieces. These people are called peers. A person who has the entire file is called a seed. As soon as you get a piece, you can send it to others. This way, everyone helps the whole group get the file faster. The computer uses a program called a client to manage all these pieces.

A programmer named Bram Cohen designed this system in April 2001.

He wanted to find a way to make downloading much quicker. He released the first version on July 2, 2001. Later, in 2004, Cohen and Ashwin Navin started a company called BitTorrent, Inc. This company was later renamed Rainberry, Inc. The system has changed a lot since those early days. For example, in 2017, the developers released a new version called BitTorrent v2. This new version uses a safer way to check that files are not broken.

BitTorrent has been a very big part of how the Internet works.

In 2004, a study showed it was responsible for one third of all Internet traffic. Even in 2019, a group called Sandvine found it was still very important. At that time, it made up about 2.46% of all downloaded data. It also made up 27.58% of all uploaded data. These numbers show how much people use this method to move files. It is one of the most common ways to handle very large digital files.

You can think of BitTorrent like a giant potluck dinner.

In a normal download, one person brings all the food for everyone. If that person is slow, everyone waits a long time to eat. With BitTorrent, every guest brings one small dish to share. As you grab a snack, you also pass a dish to your neighbor. This makes the whole meal happen much faster for the entire group. It turns a single task into a team effort that helps everyone.
