WASTE is a special kind of software used for chatting and sharing files.

It was created by Justin Frankel at a company called Nullsoft in 2003. The name comes from a novel by Thomas Pynchon called The Crying of Lot 49. In that book, W.A.S.T.E. is a secret postal service. This software lets people use instant messaging and chat rooms. It also lets them browse and share files with one another. Even though it was released under a public license, AOL removed it quickly. They did this less than 24 hours after it first came out.

Most internet tools use a central server to connect people. WASTE works in a different way called a decentralized network. This means there is no single hub or boss in the middle. Instead, people connect to each other directly using their own computers. This type of network is often called a darknet. Users pick a group of trusted computers to join together. This small group of connected computers is called a mesh.

To keep messages safe, the software uses strong encryption. Encryption is a way to turn information into secret code. This makes sure that outside people cannot read the messages. The system uses RSA public keys to help computers find each other. Users share these keys so their computers can talk safely. Once connected, the computers automatically swap keys to help the network grow. This makes the network stronger and helps files move faster.

Because there is no central leader, everyone in the group is equal. No single person can kick another member out of the network. This makes the system very hard to control or shut down. However, setting it up can be a hard job for some. You might need to change settings on your computer's firewall. A firewall is a tool that manages outside connections. You also need to know how to use digital keys and IP addresses.

Many different versions of WASTE exist today. Some people use the SourceForge edition to keep the code updated. There is also a version called BlackBelt WASTE. This version is very advanced and supports other networks like Tor and i2p. It even has a feature for video calls called Conference VoIP. Some older networks have been running for over ten years. These stable groups can hold many terabytes of secure files.
