Napster was a famous way to share digital music files online. It was a peer-to-peer application, which means people shared files directly with one another. Two men named Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker started the service in 1999.

Most of the music shared on the platform used the MP3 format. This was a type of digital audio file. Napster helped people find songs that were hard to get. This included older songs or even unreleased recordings. It changed how people thought about music for a short time.

The way Napster worked used a special system. It used a centralized database to help everyone find music. This database was a big list kept by Napster. It showed every song being shared by people using the software.

Users could search this list to find what they wanted. Then, they could download the files from other people. However, the system needed that central database to work. If the database went away, the whole service would stop working. This was different from later systems that did not need a center.

Napster became very popular very quickly. At its peak, it had about 80 million registered users.

In February 2001, it reached a high point of 26.4 million users worldwide. The service was not just for Windows computers. In the year 2000, a company called Black Hole Media made a version for Macintosh. They called it Macster. Napster later bought it and made it the official version for Mac users. This allowed many more people to use the service.

Many big music companies had serious problems with Napster. They said users were sharing music without permission. This is called copyright infringement.

The band Metallica filed a lawsuit in April 2000. The rapper Dr. Dre also filed a lawsuit a month later. They wanted Napster to stop sharing their music. The courts eventually ruled against Napster. The court said Napster had to stop sharing music that people did not own. Because it could not follow these rules, Napster shut down in July 2001. The company filed for bankruptcy in June 2002.

Even though the original service ended, the Napster name lived on. The brand was bought by a company called Roxio. It became an online music store known as Napster 2.0. Later, Best Buy bought the service and sold it to Rhapsody in 2011.
