File sharing

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

File sharing is the way people distribute or provide access to digital media. This includes many things like computer programs, books, and videos. People use several different methods to move these files around. Some use removable media, which are physical tools you can plug into a computer. Others use centralized servers on computer networks to store data. You can also find files through hyperlinked documents on the internet. Another way is through peer-to-peer networking, where computers connect directly to each other.

Peer-to-peer, or P2P, is a special way that computers work together. In this system, files are stored on the computers of many different users. A central server might help index these files so people can find them. Some networks are decentralized, which means they have no single center point. This is helpful because the network has no single point of failure. If one part of a decentralized network stops working, the rest can stay active. This is how the Gnutella network was designed to work.

The history of sharing files began with physical tools. Early computers could access files using systems like Usenet in 1979 or FTP servers in the 1970s. In 1991, a way to shrink audio files called mp3 encoding was standardized. This made music files much smaller and easier to send. In June 1999, a system called Napster was released. It was a famous peer-to-peer system that used a central server. However, Napster was later sued by recording companies and had to shut down.

Many different programs and websites have appeared over the years. In 2000, Gnutella and Freenet were released to offer new ways to connect. Kazaa became very popular until it declined around 2004. In 2005, the website Megaupload was established to help people share files. In January 2012, the United States Department of Justice shut down Megaupload. At that time, the site claimed to have 50,000,000 people using it every day. This led to many other sites changing how they worked.

Today, file sharing is part of many things we do every day. Many people use cloud-based services like Google Drive or Dropbox. These services help you sync files so they stay the same on all your devices. You can also use these tools to work together on projects. Some people use sharing to get scientific data or free content. However, sharing can also be a hard job for artists. Some studies show that unauthorized sharing can hurt the sales of recorded music.
