File sharing

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

File sharing is a way to send digital items. These items can be songs, videos, or books. People use many ways to share. Some use small tools like USB drives. Others use the internet to send files to each other.

One way is called peer-to-peer, or P2P. In a P2P system, computers talk directly to each other.

A tool called Napster was a very famous P2P system. It helped people find music. Later, other tools like Gnutella were made. Gnutella was a decentralized network. This means it had no single center point. If one part broke, the rest still worked.

Another popular tool is BitTorrent. It is often used to share large files and science data.

Sharing can cause many arguments. Some people say it hurts sales for artists. Other studies show it might not change sales much. Some companies even sued people for sharing files. Today, many people use cloud services like Google Drive. These services help us sync files across many devices. This makes it easy to work together from anywhere.
