BitTorrent is a way to share files on the Internet.

Most people download files from one single source. This can be slow if many people want the same file. BitTorrent works differently. It uses a peer-to-peer system. This means many computers work together as a team.

When you use BitTorrent, a large file is split into small pieces. These are called segments. Instead of getting everything from one place, you get pieces from many people. These people are called peers. A person who has the whole file is called a seed. Seeds help the group by sending pieces to others. As you get new pieces, you can also send them to other peers. This makes the whole process very fast.

Bram Cohen designed this system in 2001. He wanted to make downloading much quicker. A BitTorrent client is a special program used to join a swarm. A swarm is the group of computers sharing the file. Trackers help the client find other users in the swarm. This method helps people share very large files, like videos or music.
