Open source is a way to make computer software.

Usually, companies keep their code secret. Code is the set of instructions that tells a program what to do. Open source is different. It makes the code free for anyone to see. People can also change the code to make it better. This is called modification.

Some projects are very big and worth a lot of money. For example, Linux is a very important project. It has a market value of $16 billion.
