Computers need a way to talk to each other to share information. The File Transfer Protocol, or FTP, is a standard way this happens.

It uses a model called a client and a server. The server is a computer that holds files for others to use. The client is the computer that asks to get those files. This system makes it possible to move data across a network. It is a very important part of how computers work together.

FTP works by using two separate connections at the same time. One connection is for control, which carries your commands. The other connection is for data, which carries the actual files.

Sometimes, a digital wall called a firewall blocks the server from reaching you. In this case, the system uses passive mode. In passive mode, the client starts the data connection instead. This allows the files to move even when a firewall is present.

People have used FTP for a very long time. A man named Abhay Bhushan wrote the first rules for it. He published them on April 16, 1971.

At first, it ran on an older system called NCP. Later, it was updated to work with TCP/IP in 1980 and 1985. These updates helped it work on the modern internet. Many people still use versions of these rules today.

There are many ways to send different kinds of data. For plain text, it uses a mode called ASCII. For images and other files, it uses binary mode.

In binary mode, the computer sends the file byte by byte. This ensures the file stays exactly the same when it arrives. Users can also log in with a username and password. Some servers allow anonymous access, which means no password is needed.

You might have used something like FTP without knowing it. Many file managers, like Windows File Explorer, can use it.

Some web browsers used to show FTP sites directly. However, Google Chrome and Firefox stopped supporting it in 2021. They did this because newer ways like SFTP are more secure. Even so, the ideas behind FTP still help us understand how data moves.
