Shawn Fanning is a famous American computer programmer. He is also a business leader and an investor. Fanning is most known for creating Napster in 1999. Napster was a peer-to-peer platform. This is a way for people to share files directly with each other.

This new way of sharing music became very popular. Fanning even appeared on the cover of Time magazine. He was a very important part of the early internet age.

Napster worked by letting people trade music files. Fanning released a test version on June 1, 1999. Soon, hundreds of college students at Northeastern University used it. He worked with a co-founder named Sean Parker. They chose the name Napster from Fanning's high school nickname, "Nappy."

This name came from his hair texture. The free version of the site shut down in 2001. This happened because of court orders about music copyrights. Later, a paid version was sold to Rhapsody in 2011.

Fanning has worked on many different technology projects. In 2003, he started a company called Snocap. He worked with Jordan Mendelson and Ron Conway. Snocap wanted to be a marketplace for digital media.

However, the company had many technical problems. It also had poor customer support. By late 2007, the company had to let go of 60% of its workers. In 2008, a company called imeem bought Snocap in a fire sale.

After Snocap, Fanning worked on a project called Rupture. He and Jon Baudanza made it in late 2006. Rupture was a social tool for gamers. It helped players in World of Warcraft talk to each other.

Electronic Arts bought Rupture for $30 million. Fanning worked at Electronic Arts for a short time. He was part of a group of layoffs in November 2009. After that, he started a new company called Path.com in early 2010.

Fanning's life has also been part of popular culture. He appeared in a movie called The Italian Job in 2003. In the film, he plays himself.

He also appeared in a Volkswagen commercial in 2008. In 2011, he started Airtime.com with Sean Parker. They raised money from people like Ashton Kutcher. Airtime launched in June 2012, but the technology crashed often. In 2013, he founded Helium Systems. This company raised $16 million in 2014.
