2666 is a massive and famous novel by the writer Roberto Bolaño. It was published in 2004, one year after the author passed away. The book is very long, with over 1,100 pages in the original Spanish. It is a fragmentary novel, which means it is made of many different pieces. These pieces come together to tell a complicated story. Readers often find the book to be a deep and mysterious experience.

The story is split into five distinct parts that link together. One part follows four literary critics searching for a hidden writer named Benno von Archimboldi. Another part focuses on a professor named Óscar Amalfitano and his daughter, Rosa. A third section follows an American journalist named Oscar Fate in the city of Santa Teresa. The fourth part looks at unsolved crimes against women in that city. Finally, the last part reveals the true life of the mysterious writer Archimboldi.

Bolaño wrote this book during a very difficult time in his life. He was quite sick and was waiting for a liver transplant. He never actually visited the city of Ciudad Juárez in Mexico. However, he learned about the real events there from his friends. One friend was a Mexican journalist named Sergio González Rodríguez. He wrote a book called Huesos en el desierto about the crimes in that area.

The title of the book, 2666, is a mystery that people still discuss. Some people think the number sounds like the end of the world. Others think it might be a joke or a link to the Bible. The number 2666 does not actually appear in the story itself. However, Bolaño used similar numbers in his other books like Amulet. In that book, a road looks like a cemetery in the year 2666.

Many people in the literary world believe this is a masterpiece. It was called the best novel of 2005 in Spain and Latin America. Oprah Winfrey even praised the English translation in her magazine. The New York Times also named it one of the ten best books of 2008. Critics say the book is like a beautiful and difficult puzzle. It asks readers to follow many paths to see the whole picture.
