Bolaño had a very busy life that took him to many places. He was born in 1953 in Santiago, Chile. As a young boy, he lived in different towns like Viña del Mar and Quilpué. He was a bookish child who often felt like an outsider at school. When he was ten, he had his first job selling bus tickets. Later, he moved to Mexico City to work as a journalist.

His life was not always easy or simple. In 1973, he went back to Chile to support a new government. After a military coup happened, he was arrested and held for eight days. He said he heard others being hurt while he was in custody. He was eventually freed by two former classmates who were prison guards. Later, he moved to Spain to start a new life.

In Spain, Bolaño worked many different jobs to help his family. He worked as a dishwasher, a bellhop, and even a garbage collector. He lived in a small beach town called Blanes for many years. He began writing more fiction after his son was born in 1990. He wanted to make sure his family had enough money for the future. He continued to write poetry even while he wrote his famous novels.

Bolaño wrote books that many people find dazzling and rich. He won the Rómulo Gallegos Prize for his novel, The Savage Detectives. This book follows the adventures of characters named Arturo Belano and Ulises Lima. He also wrote a huge book called 2666, which won a big award later. His stories can be dark or funny, but they are always powerful. He is often compared to other great writers like Jorge Luis Borges.
