It covers much of the American South and some parts of the Midwest. This area includes the Deep South and the Upland South. Some people also include southern Missouri and parts of Indiana or Ohio. In this region, evangelical Protestantism has a very strong influence on culture and politics. Many people there follow denominations like the Baptists or Methodists. This religious influence makes the area different from the West or New England. In those other regions, more people identify as non-religious.

Religious life works in specific ways within this region. Many residents attend church more often than people in other places. They often place a high value on traditional religious beliefs. Some people in the Bible Belt believe the Bible is the literal word of God. For example, 56% of people in Mississippi hold this belief. In Alabama, 51% of people believe this as well. These shared values help shape how the community lives and thinks. This creates a strong sense of shared faith across many different states.

History shows how these religious traditions grew over a long time. During the colonial period, the South was mostly an Anglican stronghold. However, religious revival movements changed this over the next century. Many people joined the Methodist and Baptist groups during these movements. A man named Shubal Stearns moved to North Carolina in 1755. He started a revival that spread through the Piedmont region. Another leader, Daniel Marshall, became an important Baptist leader in Georgia. These early movements helped build the religious foundation seen today.

There are many interesting facts about the specific states in this area.

Tennessee has the highest proportion of evangelical Protestants at 52%. Alabama is also very religious, with only 12% of people saying they are non-religious. A 2016 study found ten of the most religious states include Alabama and Mississippi. Other states include Tennessee, Louisiana, Arkansas, South Carolina, West Virginia, Georgia, Oklahoma, and North Carolina. The term "Bible Belt" was first used by a journalist named H. L. Mencken in 1924. He wrote about the region in the Chicago Daily Tribune.

Different parts of the country show how these ideas connect to other places. Some people call certain cities the "Buckle of the Bible Belt." Abilene, Texas, is one such city because it has three Protestant universities. Charlotte, North Carolina, is another important place because it is the birthplace of Billy Graham. There are even smaller Bible Belts in places like West Michigan and near Chicago. These areas are also known for being socially and fiscally conservative. This shows how religious traditions can create unique communities in different parts of the country.
