It is defined more by its land than by state lines. This area is mostly made of high ground like mountains and plateaus. You can find the southern Appalachian Mountains here. The region also includes the Ozarks and the Ouachita Mountains.

Other parts include the Cumberland Plateau and the Nashville Basin. It sits west of the busy cities on the East Coast. This land is very different from the flat coastal plains nearby.

This region works differently than the Deep South. In the Deep South, many people worked on huge plantations. Those large farms grew crops like cotton, rice, and sugar. In the Upland South, people lived in a more spread-out way. They lived in rural areas with few big cities or towns. Most families practiced small-scale farming and raised animals.

They also spent a lot of time hunting in the woods. This way of life was built around family groups and small farms.

History shows how this region grew during the late 1700s.

Many people moved from places like Pennsylvania and Virginia. They traveled along paths like the Great Wagon Road. These settlers were often English, German, or Scots-Irish. Some even came from New Sweden. They brought new ideas for living in the forest. For example, they used logs to build cabins. They also used split-rail fences to mark their land.

There are many specific places to name in this region.

It includes states like West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina. It even reaches into parts of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. The Upland South also covers parts of Oklahoma and Texas. Some people use the term "Upper South" to describe these same states. This name often refers to the political boundaries of the states. The two names usually mean the same general area of the American South.

Understanding the Upland South helps us see how America changed. Many people from this region moved even further west. They helped settle the southern parts of the Midwest. This included places like Missouri and southern Illinois.

Because they moved so much, they helped shape the culture of those new states. You can see their history in the hills and the way towns were built. Even today, the land and the history stay linked together.
