These churches mainly serve and are led by African Americans. They are more than just buildings for prayer. They are important places for community and shared spiritual life. Many people find deep meaning in the act of gathering together. This connection to people is often more important than the church building itself.

These churches grew out of a need for freedom and respect. In the 1800s, many Black people were not allowed in white churches. These white churches often practiced unfair rules based on race. To find their own way, Black people created their own spaces. During the time of slavery, they sometimes met in secret. These hidden meetings were called hush harbors.

In these spots, they could worship freely and use their own traditions. They often mixed Christian teachings with African rhythms and customs.

Many famous churches were started by people who had been freed from slavery.

Another old one is St. Augustine in New Orleans. It was started by freedmen in 1841 and is a Black Catholic church. These early groups helped build strong foundations for the future.

After the Civil War ended, these churches became very busy centers of life.

They helped people learn to read and become leaders. The AME Church grew very fast during this time. It went from 50,000 new members to over 250,000 people in the South. In 1895, the National Baptist Convention was formed to bring groups together. By 2005, there were about 25,000 Black churches across the country. They include many groups like Baptists, Methodists, and Catholics.

In the 1950s and 1960s, these churches played a huge role in history.

They were centers of strength for the civil rights movement. Many famous leaders came from these church communities. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. and Ralph David Abernathy were ministers. These leaders used their faith to fight for justice and equality. Some thinkers also created "Black theology" to talk about freedom. This movement used the Bible to inspire people to fight racism.
