This group includes people with roots in many Black racial groups from Africa. Many have ancestors from West and Central Africa. The U.S. Census Bureau says they are the second-largest group in the country. As of July 2024, there were about 42,951,595 Black people in the U.S. This means they make up about 12.63% of the total population.

Many were artisans, farmers, or warriors. They were brought to work on large farms called plantations. In the early 1600s, some arrived in Jamestown, Virginia, as indentured servants. These servants worked for a few years without pay. Some could eventually buy their freedom with tools or cash.

Life was very hard for many people for a long time. Most Black people remained enslaved in the American South. This lasted until the Civil War between 1861 and 1865. After the North won, four million enslaved people were finally freed.

During a time called Reconstruction, many gained citizenship. Some even gained the right to vote. However, many people still faced unfair treatment and laws. People worked hard for many years to change these things.

Many people fought for change through the civil rights movement. They sought political and social freedom for everyone.

This movement helped end legal segregation. Today, the community is also growing through new immigration. As of 2022, 10% of the Black population were immigrants. Many of these people come from different African nations. This brings new stories and traditions to the United States.

African American culture has changed the whole world.
