African Americans are a large group of people in the United States.

They have roots in many Black groups from Africa. Most come from West and Central Africa.

History for this group began long ago. In the 1500s and 1600s, many people were taken from Africa. They were brought to the Americas to work as slaves.

They worked on large farms called plantations. Some people worked as indentured servants. These workers had to work for a set time. Some could eventually buy their freedom.

Many people fought for their rights. During the Civil War, four million enslaved people were freed.

Later, the civil rights movement fought for social freedom. People worked to end unfair laws.

Today, African Americans help shape our world. They make great music like jazz, rock and roll, and hip hop.
