Some people call them "oldline" because of their long history and influence. This name describes churches with deep roots in society. They are often different from evangelical or fundamentalist groups. These groups focus more on being "theologically liberal" or "progressive."

How these churches work is quite interesting. They often practice what is called "theological pluralism." This means they allow many different ideas within the same group. Some members hold conservative views, while others are more liberal. About half of these Protestants describe themselves as liberal. They often focus on social justice and personal salvation. Many also work together through groups like the National Council of Churches.

The name "mainline" has a curious history. It was created during debates in the 1920s. Some say it comes from the Philadelphia Main Line. This is a group of wealthy suburbs near Philadelphia. Many people living there belonged to these specific denominations. Today, most of these churches stay in the Northeastern and Midwestern United States.

There are seven very large churches in this tradition. A person named William Hutchison called them the "Seven Sisters."

The United Methodist Church is the largest with about 5.04 million members. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is second with 2.7 million members. The Episcopal Church is third with 1.6 million members. The Presbyterian Church (USA) is fourth with 1.1 million members. The American Baptist Churches USA is fifth with 1.1 million members. The United Church of Christ is sixth with 710,000 members. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is seventh with 278,000 members.

It is helpful to see how these groups connect to the world. In 1970, these churches represented over 30 percent of Americans. By 2024, about 13 percent of Americans were white non-Hispanic mainline Protestants. They are often called "ecumenical" because they try to work with other faiths. Some researchers even use this term to describe similar churches in Europe and Africa. This shows that these ideas can spread far beyond just one country.
