Many people visit to go scuba diving. They also love to go snorkeling. The reef helps the country catch fish for food.

Many living things call the reef home. There are 70 types of hard coral. There are also 36 types of soft coral. You can find 500 kinds of fish there. Scientists say we have only found 10% of the species. This means 90% still need to be studied!

There are special areas called atolls. These are ring-shaped reefs. One is called Lighthouse Reef. It has a famous spot called the Great Blue Hole. The reef faces some big problems. The ocean is getting warmer. This can cause coral bleaching. Bleaching is when coral loses its color. It can also make coral sick. Belize works hard to protect the reef. They even banned drilling for oil near it.
