The Belize Barrier Reef is a huge and beautiful underwater world.

It sits along the coast of the country of Belize. This reef is a part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. That system stretches from the Yucatán Peninsula all the way down to Honduras. Because it is so big, it is the second largest reef system in the world. The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is the only one that is larger.

This reef is very important to the people living in Belize. It brings in almost half of the 260,000 visitors who come to the country. Many people visit to go scuba diving or snorkeling. The reef also helps the local fishing industry stay strong.

Many different kinds of life live within the reef. There are 70 species of hard coral and 36 species of soft coral. You can also find 500 different species of fish there. There are hundreds of other invertebrates living in the water too.

Scientists believe we have only discovered 10% of all the species. This means that 90% of the life there still needs to be researched. The reef has many different shapes like walls and pinnacles. It also has reef flats spread across a huge area of the sea. These different parts create many places for divers to explore.

People have been studying this reef for a long time. In 1842, Charles Darwin called it a very remarkable reef.

One famous spot is the Great Blue Hole. This is located at the Lighthouse Reef, which is an atoll. An atoll is a ring-shaped reef. The Great Blue Hole became very famous because of Jacques Cousteau in 1970. There are two other atolls called Turneffe Atoll and Glover's Reef. Turneffe Atoll is the one closest to Belize City. These places make the reef a very special location.

Belize works hard to keep the reef safe through many rules.

A large part of the reef is in the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System. This system includes seven marine reserves and 450 cayes. In 1996, it became a World Heritage Site. This means it is a place worth protecting for the whole world. In 2010, Belize became the first country to ban bottom trawling. They also banned offshore oil drilling near the reef in 2015. These steps help protect the natural habitats found there.

Even with these rules, the reef faces many hard jobs. The ocean is getting warmer due to global warming.

When the water gets too hot, it causes coral bleaching. Bleaching is when the coral loses its color and can die. In 1995, a mass bleaching event killed about 10% of the coral. Later, Hurricane Mitch hit the reef in 1998. Scientists saw that 48% of the live coral was lost after that storm. Other threats include pollution, shipping, and fishing. Keeping the reef healthy is a big task for everyone.
