Neritic zone

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The neritic zone is a very busy part of the ocean. Some people call it the coastal ocean. It is the shallow part of the sea near the land. This zone sits right above the edge of the continental shelf. This shelf is a big underwater ledge. The neritic zone matters because it holds most sea life. It is a place where the ocean meets the coast.

Sunlight is the main way this zone works. Sunlight can reach all the way to the ocean floor here. This area of light is called the photic zone. The light usually reaches down about 100 meters. This light allows tiny plants to grow through photosynthesis. These plants use light to make food. This process starts the whole food web.

Scientists use different names to study this area. Marine biologists look at the living things there. They see zones like the infralittoral zone. This part is filled with algae. They also study the circalittoral zone. This area has animals like oysters that stay in one place. These animals are called sessile. The subtidal zone is also part of this area. It stays under the water all the time.

Many facts help us understand this zone. It reaches depths of about 200 meters. That is about 660 feet deep. The water has plenty of oxygen. The temperature stays mostly the same. The salt levels are also very stable. There is also low water pressure here. These things make it a great home for life.

This zone connects to many things we know. It supports the world's great wild fisheries. This means it provides food for many fish. Tiny things like phytoplankton and sargassum seaweed grow here. Small creatures like shrimp and fish eat them. Even corals live in this zone. They like it more than the intertidal zone. This is because the water is more stable there.
