Beauty pageant

A beauty pageant is a special kind of competition. Contestants are judged and ranked on many different things. In the past, these contests mostly looked at physical looks. Today, many pageants look for "inner beauty" too. This means judges look at personality and intelligence. They also look at moral character and charity work.

Some pageants are for women, but others are for men. There are even contests for children. Most big pageants start with small local contests. These local winners then move on to much larger stages.

There are many ways a pageant works. Organizers make the rules for each contest. They decide the age range for the people entering. Rules might say a person must be unmarried. They might also require people to be available for promotions. Contestants often wear different types of clothing. They might wear formal dresses or sportswear. Some even wear designer clothing or swimsuits.

Winners receive many wonderful prizes. They might get a crown or a tiara. They may also receive a sash, a bouquet, or a scepter. Some winners even win scholarships or prize money.

Beauty contests have a very long history. In ancient Greece, people held contests called Callisteia. On the island of Lesbos, women gathered to find the fairest. In Arcadia, women known as Chrysophoroi competed at a festival. Men also had contests in Greece. One contest in Elis gave a handsome man a suit of armor.

In the 1800s, the Eglinton Tournament in Scotland crowned a "Queen of Beauty." Georgiana Seymour, the Duchess of Somerset, won that event in 1839. Later, in 1880, Delaware held the first recorded pageant in the United States.

Modern pageants became very popular in the 20th century. The Miss America pageant started in 1921 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It was created to bring more tourists to the city. A sixteen-year-old named Margaret Gorman was the first winner. She won $100 for her victory. In 1926, the first international contest began in Galveston, Texas. This event was called the International Pageant of Pulchritude. It later became known as Miss Universe.

Today, the "Big Four" are the most famous international contests. These are Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss International, and Miss Earth. Miss World was started by Eric Morley in 1951. Miss Universe began in 1952. Miss International started in 1960. Miss Earth began in 2001 to help people protect the environment.
