It is open to women from the United States between ages 18 and 28. The contest is a way for women to show many different skills. It is more than just a beauty show. It includes things like public speaking and talent. People have watched this event for over one hundred years. It is a major part of American culture.

Contestants earn points in several different ways. A private interview with judges counts for 30 percent. Answering a question on stage is worth 10 percent. A talent performance or a short speech is worth 20 percent. Showing physical fitness in athletic wear is also worth 20 percent. Modeling evening wear counts for the final 20 percent. These different parts help judges pick a winner.

The pageant began in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It started from an event called The Fall Frolic in 1920. That event used rolling wicker chairs to bring people to the boardwalk. The organizers wanted to encourage summer visitors to stay longer. In 1921, the first real Miss America contest was held.

Margaret Gorman was the winner at age 16. She was called the "Golden Mermaid" and won $100.

History shows that the pageant has changed a lot. In 1944, winners began receiving college scholarships. This was a new idea started by Jean Bartel. The contest also had many difficult times. For many years, rules kept certain races from competing. Rule seven once said contestants must be white. That rule was finally removed in 1950. In 1970, Cheryl Browne became the first African-American contestant.

Many women have made history through this contest. Bess Myerson was the first Jewish-American winner in 1945. Nina Davuluri was the first Indian-American winner in 2014. The pageant even changed its whole format in 2018. This new version was called "Miss America 2.0." It meant judges would no longer look at physical appearance.

The most recent winner is Cassie Donegan from New York. She was crowned on September 7, 2025, in Orlando, Florida.
