Today, women compete in many ways to win the crown. They must show skill in a talent or give a speech. They also answer questions from judges. Some parts of the contest look at fitness or evening wear. Winners can earn money for college. The newest winner is Cassie Donegan from New York.

The contest has a long history with many changes. In the past, there were rules that kept some women out. For a long time, the contest was not open to all races. That changed in 1970 when Cheryl Browne competed. Other women have also made history. Bess Myerson was the first Jewish-American winner. Nina Davuluri was the first Indian-American winner.
