Athletes compete in many different types of events. They perform gymnastics moves and lift heavy weights. They also do metabolic conditioning, which is a type of exercise for fitness. Some events include swimming, road cycling, and strongman activities. Many of these events are kept a secret until the Games begin. This surprise element tests if the athletes are truly ready for anything. Winners earn cash prizes and the special title of "Fittest on Earth."

The competition follows a specific path to find the best. It starts with a stage called the Open. This stage is open to anyone over age 14. People can do the workouts exactly as written, or they can "scale" them to be easier. Athletes submit their scores online using videos. The Open is a huge event with many participants. In 2018, over 415,000 athletes signed up to compete. From this large group, only a few move forward. Eventually, only 30 men, 30 women, and 20 teams reach the final Games.

The history of the Games began in 2007. It started at a family ranch in Aromas, California. Dave Castro and Greg Glassman helped start the event. At first, it felt like a simple backyard barbecue. Only 70 athletes and 150 spectators attended the first year. In the early days, anyone could just show up to compete. By 2009, the organizers added a qualification stage called the Regionals. This helped manage the growing number of people who wanted to join.

The Games have moved to many different places over the years. They moved from the ranch to the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, in 2010. Later, the event was held at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin. In 2024, the Games were held at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. The event will move to Albany, New York, for the 2025 season. For the 20th anniversary in 2026, they will return to California. The competition will be held at the SAP Center in San Jose.

Many talented athletes have made their mark in this history. Mat Fraser won the men's competition five times. Rich Froning also won four times. In the women's competition, Tia-Clair Toomey won eight times. The prize money has also grown a lot since the start. The first winners received $500 in 2007. By 2019, the individual winner's prize was $300,000. In 2020, the total prize payout reached 3 million dollars. This shows how much the sport has grown since that first ranch gathering.
