World Games

sports Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The World Games are a special international event for many different sports. These are sports that are not part of the Olympic Games. They usually happen every four years. This is often one year after the Summer Olympic Games. The whole event lasts for 11 days. It is a way for many athletes to show their skills. People love watching these unique sports in action.

Organizing these games is a very big job. The International World Games Association, or IWGA, is in charge. They are based in Lausanne, Switzerland. They work with local groups in each host city. These local groups help run the events. Once the games are over, these local groups finish their work. The IWGA also works closely with the International Olympic Committee. This partnership helps everyone understand the importance of these games.

This event has a long and interesting history. The idea came from a group called the GAISF. They wanted a way to show off sports that were not in the Olympics. They formed a group in 1979 to plan everything. The very first World Games happened in 1981. This first event was held in Santa Clara, California. At that time, there were 15 sports included. One of the first gold medals went to an English tug-of-war team.

There are many interesting facts about how the games work. Around 3,500 athletes from 100 nations join the competition. They are chosen by their own international sports groups. This helps ensure the very best athletes are there to compete. Host cities do not have to build new stadiums. They often use buildings that are already there. For example, some used an old iron foundry in Duisburg. Others used the Wrocław Zoo in Poland.

Ceremonies make the games feel like a grand celebration. The opening ceremony is how everything officially begins. Athletes march in a parade to show their pride. Since 2005, they have marched in groups by their nation. There is also an athlete party held in the middle of the games. This lets every athlete join in on a big celebration. Finally, the closing ceremony ends the event. During this time, the next host city receives the official flag.
