It is held every year and is run by the IFBB Professional League. Joe Weider created this event so amateur winners could keep competing. He also wanted them to have a way to earn money. The first contest took place on September 18, 1965. It was held at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City.

Larry Scott won that very first title.

Athletes work hard to reach this stage through a qualifying season. This season lasts for one full year before the big event. To qualify, a person must meet specific rules set by the IFBB. They might place in the top three at the previous Olympia. They could also win one of the many qualifying contests. Some athletes earn their spot by earning high total points. The IFBB can even send special invitations to certain competitors.

History shows how the sport has changed over many decades. Larry Scott won the first two contests in 1965 and 1966. In 1967, Sergio Oliva won and started a new era. He was nicknamed "The Myth" because of his amazing muscle shape. He had a large upper body that tapered to a narrow waist. Arnold Schwarzenegger later became a huge star in the sport. He won several titles and appeared in the film Pumping Iron.

There are many different ways to compete in these shows. Some men compete in the Open division to show huge muscle mass. From 1992 to 1997, Dorian Yates won six times in a row. He was known for having very hard muscles. Other men compete in the Classic Physique division. This group focuses on symmetry, pleasing lines, and a small waist.

There are also divisions for Men's Physique and the 212 category. Even a Wheelchair Olympia division was added in 2018.

Records and prizes are very important to these professional athletes. Lee Haney and Ronnie Coleman both hold the record with eight wins. Ronnie Coleman is often called "The King" by many people. The prize money has grown a huge amount over time. The first winner in 1965 received $1,000. By the year 2024, the winner received $600,000. Winners are also honored with the Sandow Trophy. This trophy honors Eugen Sandow, the father of modern bodybuilding.
