He helped many people learn how to build strong muscles and stay healthy. He was a Canadian businessman who started many big things. He co-founded the International Federation of BodyBuilders with his brother, Ben. He also created famous contests like Mr. Olympia and Ms. Olympia. These events allowed people to show off their hard work and skill. People all over the world now know these names because of him.

Joe's journey began with a very simple way of training. As a teenager in Montreal, he started lifting weights to stand up to bullies. He did not have fancy gym tools back then. Instead, he built his own barbells using car wheels and axles in his family garage. In 1940, he published his first magazine called Your Physique. This magazine later became Muscle & Fitness in 1980. He also designed special training plans like the Weider System of Bodybuilding. He even wrote books about fitness with his wife, Betty.

Joe Weider was born on November 29, 1919, in Montreal, Quebec. His parents, Louis and Anna Weider, were Jewish immigrants from Poland. Growing up in Montreal gave him a unique way of speaking. His nephew said his accent was a mix of Yiddish, Canadian, and old Polish. He participated in his first bodybuilding contest when he was only 17 years old. Later in life, he moved to the United States. He lived a long life and died on March 23, 2013, at age 93.

Joe's business grew into a huge empire of many different parts. His family started Weider Nutrition in 1936 to make food for athletes. This was one of the very first companies for sports nutrition. He published many famous magazines like Flex, Shape, and Men's Fitness. He also faced some hard times with the law. In 1976, a judge said some of his weight loss ads were false. In 1985, he settled a case regarding his muscle products. He had to pay money to help research how nutrition helps muscles.

Many famous people have been linked to Joe's work over the years. The famous bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger was one of his students. Arnold even helped testify in a legal case for the Weider brothers. In 2006, Arnold gave Joe a lifetime achievement award in California. Joe's life was so interesting that a movie called Bigger was made about him in 2018. In 2014, Joe and his family were put into the International Sports Hall of Fame. His work changed how many people think about exercise today.
