He was born in Montreal, Canada. As a teen, he lifted weights to stand up to bullies. He even made his own weights using car wheels and axles!

Joe helped start the International Federation of Bodybuilders with his brother, Ben. He created big contests like Mr. Olympia. He also made many magazines. Some were called Muscle & Fitness or Shape. These magazines taught people how to stay healthy.

Joe also made food for athletes. His family started Weider Nutrition in 1936. This was one of the first companies for sports food. He worked with his wife, Betty, to write books about fitness.

Sometimes, Joe had legal trouble. He had to pay money because some ads were not true. He made claims about weight loss that were wrong. He also had to change ads for his muscle products. Even so, his work was very big. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Joe helped inspire him to start bodybuilding. In 2014, Joe was put into the International Sports Hall of Fame.
