Shuster drew the look of the hero. He used ideas from his own life. He based the hero's city on his old hometown. He also named the newspaper in the story after his first job. This was the Daily Star. Later, the name changed to the Daily Planet.

Life was not always easy for Shuster. He had many legal fights over who owned Superman. His eyesight also became very poor. This made it hard for him to draw. Still, people honor him today. There is even a street in Toronto named after him. He was also put into Hall of Fame lists for his great work.
