Bill Gaines was a famous book maker. He helped run a company called EC Comics. His father, Max Gaines, was also a big name in comics. Max helped sell comic books at newsstands.

Bill served in the army during World War II. He worked as a photographer. Later, he went to college. After his father died, Bill took over the family business.

He was known for the magazine Mad. Mad was a magazine of satire, which means it used humor to poke fun at things. He made Mad a magazine in 1955. This helped it stay free from strict rules.

Bill had a very unique way of being a boss. Some people said he was cheap. Other people said he was very kind. He once refused a small pay raise for a worker. But then, he bought that worker a very fancy dinner! He loved good food and good talk.

Bill stayed the publisher of Mad for many years. He died in 1992. He was even put into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame. This is a special group for great comic makers.
