This system used twelve different lessons to build strength. Each lesson included photographs to show how to move correctly. He taught people how to pit one muscle against another. This way of working did not require heavy weights. Instead, it focused on how the body could work against itself. He even invited his readers to write him letters about their progress.

He was born Angelo Siciliano in Italy on October 30, 1892.

As a young boy, he was very thin. He once saw a lion stretching at the zoo. He noticed how the lion used its own muscles to move. This inspired his unique way of exercising. In 1922, he legally changed his name to Charles Atlas. He chose this name because a friend said he looked like a statue.

Atlas started his fitness business in November 1922.

Many famous athletes used his methods to stay strong. These included boxing champions like Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano. Even Olympic runners and famous actors used his training.

His life was full of many different roles. He worked as a leather worker and a circus performer. He was also a model for many beautiful statues. One statue is called "The Dawn of Glory."

His famous comic book ads often told a story about a bully. These stories showed a skinny man becoming a hero through exercise. Even after he died in 1972, his fitness company continued. His name is still a part of fitness history today.
