He was known for his amazing physical strength and symmetry. Before acting, he was a top professional athlete. He won several major titles like Mr. America in 1947. He also won Mr. World in 1948 and Mr. Universe in 1950. These wins helped make bodybuilding popular all over the world. He even wrote three books to teach others about physical training.

Reeves had a very specific way of training his body. He worked out three days every week. He always did a full-body workout instead of focusing on just one part. During each session, he did three sets of 8 to 12 repetitions for every exercise. He did not care about the clock during his training. A single routine could take anywhere from two to four hours. This dedication helped him build a classic and powerful physique.

His acting career began in the mid-1950s. He became a huge star in Italian sword-and-sandal films.

He was most famous for playing the hero Hercules. He played this role in the 1958 film Hercules and its 1959 sequel, Hercules Unchained. He also played characters like Aeneas, Sandokan, and Goliath. By 1960, he was the top box-office draw in 25 different countries. At his peak, he was the highest-paid actor in Europe.

Acting was a hard job that caused him physical pain. While filming The Last Days of Pompeii in 1959, he dislocated his shoulder. This happened when his chariot slammed into a tree. He re-injured the shoulder while swimming in a later scene. These injuries got worse during his other stunt work. Eventually, the pain and stress led him to retire from movies. He also chose to leave because the market for his types of films was declining.

After his time in movies, Reeves lived a quieter life. He moved to a ranch in Valley Center, California. He spent his time there breeding horses.

He remained a strong supporter of drug-free bodybuilding. He lived on his ranch with his second wife, Aline, until her death in 1989. Reeves passed away in May 2000 at a hospital in Escondido. He is still remembered today as one of the most influential bodybuilders ever.
