He is best known for creating the "spaghetti Western" style of films. These were cowboy stories made in Europe rather than in America. Leone is considered one of the greatest directors in the history of cinema. He loved the spectacle of myths and grand stories. His work made people feel the tension of the Old West.

Leone had a very special way of filming his scenes. He liked to use extreme close-up shots of faces. He would then switch to very long shots of the landscape. This helped show both the small feelings and the big world. He also worked closely with the composer Ennio Morricone. Leone would often play Morricone's music while he was filming. This helped the actors feel the mood of the scene.

Leone was born in Rome on January 3, 1929. His father, Vincenzo Leone, was a pioneer in the film industry. His mother, Edvige Valcarenghi, was a silent film actress. Leone studied law at a university for a short time. However, he left his studies to work in movies at age 18. He started as an assistant to the director Vittorio De Sica. He even helped finish the film The Last Days of Pompeii in 1959.

In the 1960s, Leone made his most famous Western films. He directed the "Dollars Trilogy" featuring the actor Clint Eastwood. These films include A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

His characters were different from old movie heroes. They did not always wear clean clothes or white hats. Instead, they often looked dirty, sweaty, and very realistic. These films were huge hits and made Eastwood a major star.

Leone's career continued with many big projects. He directed Once Upon a Time in the West in 1968. This film was shot in Spain and Italy. Later, he spent ten years making Once Upon a Time in America. This film was about friendship and life in New York. It received a very long standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival. Leone died in Rome in 1989 at the age of 60.
