He is remembered for making movies that feel like beautiful, mysterious paintings. Instead of focusing on fast action, his films focus on mood and design. He often used long takes, which means the camera stays on a scene for a very long time. This style asks the viewer to look closely at the world on screen. His films often show tiny people inside huge, empty landscapes or modern buildings. This helps people feel the emotions of the characters in those big spaces.

Antonioni had many interests long before he started making movies. As a young boy in Ferrara, he was a very talented violinist. He even gave his first concert when he was only nine years old. He also loved to draw the fronts of houses and city gates. He used to play a game where he organized little towns with tiny figures. He said these childhood games felt just like little films. Eventually, he studied economics and then moved to Rome to study film technique.

His career saw many different kinds of stories. Early on, he made films about the lives of working-class people. Later, he moved toward stories about the middle class. He became very famous for a series of three films called a trilogy. These included L'Avventura from 1960, La Notte from 1961, and L'Eclisse from 1962. He also made his first color film, Il deserto rosso, in 1964. This film used bright colors to help tell the story.

Antonioni won some of the highest prizes in the movie world. He was the first director to win the Palme d'Or, the Golden Lion, the Golden Bear, and the Golden Leopard. He won the Palme d'Or for his 1966 film Blowup, which was set in London. That same film earned him nominations for Academy Awards in the United States. In 1995, he received an Honorary Oscar for his amazing visual style. His work was so important that three of his films are on a special list of Italian films to be saved.

Even when life was hard, Antonioni kept creating. In 1985, he had a stroke that made it difficult for him to speak or write. However, he still directed films like Beyond the Clouds in 1995. He even made a short film in his 90s called Eros. He lived to be 94 years old and passed away in Rome in 2007. His life and his art changed how people around the world think about cinema.
