Argento uses many different ways to tell his stories. He often uses a trick called a cinematic sleight-of-hand. This is when a character sees something but misinterprets it. The audience might see the same mistake as the character. He also likes to use new technology in his movies. For example, he used a moving camera tool called a Steadicam in *Phenomena*. In 1996, his film *The Stendhal Syndrome* was the first Italian film to use computer-generated imagery. This helped make his films feel very modern and unique.

His career began with writing and reviewing films. He was born in Rome in 1940. His father, Salvatore, was a film producer from Sicily. His mother, Elda, was a fashion photographer from Brazil. Argento moved to Paris for a year to work as a dishwasher. When he returned to Italy at age 16, he became a film critic. He wrote for a newspaper in Rome called *Paese Sera*. Later, he began writing scripts for other people to direct.
