Because of his impactful style, he is often called the "Master of the Thrill" or the "Master of Horror." His work has shaped how many directors approach suspense and visual storytelling. Many filmmakers, including John Carpenter, have noted how Argento's early films influenced their own work. His career spans several decades and includes various genres beyond pure horror.

Argento's filmmaking often relies on a specific cinematic technique. He frequently uses a motif known as cinematic sleight-of-hand. This involves a character witnessing a crime or an event but misinterpreting what they have seen. The audience often shares this misunderstanding, creating a sense of shared confusion. He also embraces technological advancements to enhance his visual style. For example, he utilized Steadicam technology to create prowling camera shots in the film *Phenomena*. In 1996, his film *The Stendhal Syndrome* became the first Italian film to use computer-generated imagery.

His filmography is often organized into distinct trilogies or sets of films. He created the "Animal Trilogy," which consists of *The Bird with the Crystal Plumage* (1970), *The Cat o' Nine Tails* (1971), and *Four Flies on Grey Velvet* (1971). Another major achievement is his "Three Mothers" trilogy. This series focuses on three ancient witches residing in modern cities. The trilogy includes *Suspiria* (1977), *Inferno* (1980), and *The Mother of Tears* (2007). Additionally, his 1975 film *Deep Red* is frequently cited by critics as the finest example of the giallo genre.

Argento's journey began with a deep interest in film criticism and writing. Born in Rome in 1940, he was the son of Salvatore Argento and Elda Luxardo.

After a brief period working as a dishwasher in Paris, he returned to Italy in 1957. At age 16, he began working as a film critic for the Rome-based newspaper *Paese Sera*. This role allowed him to develop a reputation for promoting genre films. By the 1960s, he transitioned into writing screenplays, including work for the epic *Once Upon a Time in the West* (1968).

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Argento reached international prominence. His directorial debut, *The Bird with the Crystal Plumage*, was a major hit in Italy. In 1978, he collaborated with George A. Romero on the zombie film *Dawn of the Dead*. For the European release, titled *Zombi*, Argento acted as a producer and provided the score. He also worked on the soundtrack for the film using the group Goblin. These years were marked by high productivity and significant genre experimentation.

Argento's professional life has often intersected with his personal connections. He had a long-term relationship with actress and screenwriter Daria Nicolodi. They collaborated on many significant films, including *Suspiria* and *Deep Red*.

Their daughter, Asia Argento, has also become a notable actress. She has appeared in several of her father's films, such as *Trauma* and *The Stendhal Syndrome*. This family connection has become a recurring element in his professional history.

Beyond traditional cinema, Argento's influence extends into modern digital media. He has contributed to the development of the survival horror video game *Dead Space*. He also provided voice work for the character Dr. Kyne in the Italian version of that game. Currently, he serves as an artistic director for the upcoming video game *Dreadful Bond*. In Rome, he maintains a horror memorabilia store called Profondo Rosso. This shop is named after his classic film *Deep Red* and houses a collection of his movies.
