Suspiria is a landmark 1977 Italian supernatural horror film. It was directed by Dario Argento and co-written with Daria Nicolodi. The film follows Suzy Bannion, an American ballet student. She travels to the Tanz Akademie in Freiburg, West Germany. This prestigious dance academy is actually a front for a coven of witches. The movie is celebrated for its intense visual style and unique musical score. It is considered one of the most influential works in the horror genre.

The story moves through a series of dark and unsettling events. Suzy arrives at the school and witnesses a student fleeing in terror. Soon, she realizes the academy is a dangerous place where people are being killed. The plot involves a hidden coven led by a powerful witch named Helena Markos. Suzy discovers a secret door by turning a blue iris on a mural. This leads her to a confrontation with the instructors. The film concludes with a violent climax as the school is consumed by fire. The coven loses its power when their leader dies.

The film is famous for its specific aesthetic choices. Argento wanted to create a nightmarish, unrealistic setting. He achieved this through the use of vivid primary colors, especially red. The production used the imbibition Technicolor process to enhance these colors. This method makes colors appear very strong and saturated. It was one of the final feature films processed using this technology in Rome. The goal was to mimic the look of classic animation, such as Walt Disney's Snow White.

Many different sources inspired the creation of Suspiria. Argento used Thomas De Quincey's 1845 essay, Suspiria de Profundis, as a foundation. The screenplay also drew from fairy tales like Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Daria Nicolodi contributed ideas based on stories of black magic. The concept of "The Three Mothers" comes from De Quincey's work. This concept includes three figures: Mater Lacrymarum, Mater Suspiriorum, and Mater Tenebrarum. Argento expanded this into a trilogy including Inferno and The Mother of Tears.

Production involved complex sets and specific locations. Much of the film was shot at De Paoli studios in Rome. The crew built a replica of the Whale House façade on a soundstage. Some scenes were filmed on location in Munich, Germany. These included the opening at the Munich-Riem Airport and scenes near the BMW Headquarters. The casting of Jessica Harper was a key decision for the production. She was chosen after Argento saw her performance in Phantom of the Paradise. She even turned down a role in the film Annie Hall to star in Suspiria.

The film's impact is measured by its critical and awards recognition. Suspiria received two Saturn Award nominations. One was for Joan Bennett's performance as Best Supporting Actress in 1978. The other was for Best DVD Classic Film Release in 2002. The musical score was a major part of its success. It was composed by the progressive rock band Goblin in collaboration with Argento. Interestingly, the music was created before the filming even began. This score has since been reused in various Hong Kong films.

Suspiria connects to broader themes in cinema and psychology. Critics have noted that the film uses Jungian archetypal imagery. This refers to universal symbols found in the human psyche. The film's stylistic flourishes became known as Argento's trademarks. His use of set-piece structures allows the camera to linger on visual details. The movie's influence is so lasting that it inspired a 2018 remake. This new version was directed by Luca Guadagnino. The film remains a primary example of how color and sound create atmosphere.
