She was widely recognized for her ability to portray harrowing and desperate characters. These intense roles earned her significant acclaim from both Swedish and international critics. Throughout her career, she became a prominent figure in global cinema. Her work often explored deep human emotions and complex psychological states. She is remembered as a performer who could master the most difficult parts of the human experience.

Acting requires immense discipline and physical control. Thulin began her training with ballet lessons as a young girl. This early training likely helped her with the physical demands of the stage and screen. In 1948, she was accepted by the Royal Dramatic Theatre. This institution is a major center for performing arts in Sweden. As an actress, she often underwent total transformations to suit her roles. For instance, in the 1958 film *The Magician*, she spent much of the production dressed as a boy. This shows her willingness to change her appearance for the sake of a character.

Thulin's career is closely linked to the work of filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. They collaborated on several landmark films over many years. These include *Wild Strawberries* (1957) and *Winter Light* (1962). She also appeared in *The Silence* (1963), *The Rite* (1969), and *Cries and Whispers* (1972). Her partnership with Bergman allowed her to explore sophisticated and challenging narratives. This collaboration helped cement her status as a leading lady in European cinema.

Thulin's professional journey included many prestigious international awards. In 1958, she won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for *Brink of Life*. She also made history by winning the inaugural Guldbagge Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. This happened in 1963 for her performance in *The Silence*. In 1968, she worked with director Luchino Visconti in the historical epic *The Damned*. This role earned her a National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Actress. Later, in 1974, she won a David di Donatello Award and received a BAFTA nomination.

Her personal life was as international as her career. Thulin was born in Sollefteå, Ångermanland, in northern Sweden, on 27 January 1926. Her father, Adam Thulin, worked as a fisherman. She was married to Harry Schein, the founder of the Swedish Film Institute, for over 30 years. While she traveled for work, she maintained several residences across Europe. She owned an apartment in Paris, France, in the early 1960s. She also had a beach house in San Felice Circeo, Italy. For 34 years, she was a resident of Sacrofano, Italy.

In her later years, Thulin turned to writing to share her experiences. She published her memoir, titled *Någon jag kände* (which means "Somebody I knew"), in 1992. This book provided a look into her life and the world she inhabited. Thulin passed away in Stockholm on 7 January 2004, following medical treatment for cancer. Even after her death, her influence on the arts continues through her hometown. The municipality of Sollefteå established the Ingrid Thulin Memorial Scholarship in 2008.

The scholarship is valued at SEK 20,000 and is awarded annually. It is available to any applicants who are pursuing studies in the arts. The scholarship is sponsored by Harriet Andersson, who was a longtime personal friend of Thulin. This gift ensures that Thulin's dedication to the performing arts inspires new generations of creators. Her legacy remains a vital part of the Swedish cultural landscape and the global film community.
