Bibi Andersson was a celebrated Swedish actress of the stage, screen, and television. She was a central figure in mid-20th-century cinema. Her career is most notable for her frequent collaborations with the filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. Through these partnerships, she became a symbol of Swedish acting talent. Her work spanned several decades, from the early 1950s through the early 2000s. She earned international respect for her ability to portray complex characters.

Andersson's journey into professional acting involved rigorous formal training. She first studied at the Terserus Drama School. Later, she attended the Royal Dramatic Theatre School from 1954 to 1956.

After completing her education, she joined the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. Before her professional training, she gained early experience working as an extra on film sets. This hands-on work provided a foundation for her future success. She eventually transitioned from background roles to leading performances in major motion pictures.

Her professional relationship with Ingmar Bergman began very early in 1951. Their first collaboration was not a film, but an advertisement for a detergent called Bris. This connection grew into a massive body of work. During the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, she starred in ten motion pictures directed by Bergman. She also appeared in three television films under his direction.

Her roles in Bergman's films included titles such as The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, and Persona. These films helped establish her as a major talent in global cinema.

Andersson's acting style was often characterized by intense and emotional performances. In the 1966 film Persona, she played a nurse named Alma. In this film, she worked alongside actress Liv Ullmann, who played a character suffering from a psychosomatic condition. Because the other character was mostly mute, Andersson delivered the majority of the film's dialogue. This role was highly significant for her career. It earned her the Best Actress award at the 4th Guldbagge Awards.

Throughout her career, Andersson received many prestigious international honors. In 1958, she shared the Best Actress Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for the film Brink of Life. This film was set in a maternity ward. In 1963, she won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 13th Berlin International Film Festival. This award was for her performance in Vilgot Sjöman's film, The Mistress. In her home country, she won four Guldbagge Awards. These included one award for Best Actress and three for Best Supporting Actress.

Beyond her work in Sweden, Andersson achieved success in American theatre and film. She made her American theatre debut in 1973 with a production of Full Circle by Erich Maria Remarque.

Her most famous American film was released in 1977, titled I Never Promised You a Rose Garden. She also worked with several famous international directors and actors. These included John Huston, Robert Altman, and Paul Newman. She also co-starred with Steve McQueen in a stage adaptation of An Enemy of the People.

In her later years, Andersson expanded her professional reach into directing and humanitarian work. In 1990, she served as a theatre director at Dramaten in Stockholm. She also worked as a supervisor for the Road to Sarajevo, which was a humanitarian project.

In 1996, she published her autobiography, Ett ögonblick, which translates to A Moment or A Blink of the Eye. Her legacy is recognized even in science, as a minor planet discovered by Eric Walter Elst is named Bibi Andersson. She passed away on 14 April 2019, at the age of 83, following complications from a stroke.
