He is most famous for inventing a style called "biomechanical" art. This style shows human bodies and machine parts joined together in cold, interconnected ways. His work often looks like surreal, nightmarish dreamscapes. Giger's art is widely recognized in science fiction and cyberpunk culture. He was even inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 2013.

Giger developed his unique look through specific artistic techniques. He started his career making small ink drawings. Later, he moved into oil paintings, pastels, markers, and ink. For most of his professional life, he worked predominantly with an airbrush. This tool allowed him to create monochromatic, or single-color, canvases with smooth textures. His biomechanical vision was influenced by several famous painters. These included Salvador Dalí, Ernst Fuchs, and Dado. He was also influenced by the sculptor Stanislaw Szukalski and painters Austin Osman Spare and Mati Klarwein.

His professional journey began in Switzerland. Giger was born in 1940 in Chur, the capital of the Graubünden canton. His father was a pharmacist who believed art was a "breadless profession." Because of this, his father encouraged him to study pharmacy instead. Giger chose a different path and moved to Zürich in 1962. He studied architecture and industrial design at the School of Applied Arts until 1970. His first major success arrived in 1969. A poster publishing company in Switzerland began printing and distributing his work.

Giger achieved global fame through his work in the film industry. He was a member of the special effects team for the 1979 film *Alien*. This team won an Academy Award for Best Achievement in Visual Effects in 1980. Giger was specifically responsible for designing the xenomorph alien. This design was inspired by his own painting, *Necronom IV*. He also contributed to other films like *Aliens*, *Alien 3*, *Alien Resurrection*, and *Species*. His designs for the "Space Jockey" and the spacecraft "The Derelict" appeared in the 2012 film *Prometheus*.

Beyond movies, Giger's style reached many different forms of media. He created many famous music album covers. These include works for Danzig, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and Celtic Frost. He even designed a specialized microphone stand for singer Jonathan Davis. This stand was made of aluminum and followed his biomechanical rules.

Giger's art also appeared on Ibanez guitars through a signature series. These guitars featured engravings like "Biomechanical Matrix" and "NY City VI."

His influence extends into the world of physical spaces and games. Giger designed unique interiors, including two "Giger Bars" in Switzerland. One is in Chur and the other is in Gruyères.

He supervised these projects closely to ensure they matched his original concepts. In the digital world, his work inspired adventure games like *Dark Seed* and *Dark Seed II*. The survival horror game *Scorn* is also strongly inspired by his visual style. Even in space, his name lives on through the asteroid 109712 Giger, named in his memory.

Today, Giger's massive body of work is preserved for the public. In 1998, he acquired the Saint-Germain Castle in Gruyères, Switzerland. This castle now serves as the H.R. Giger Museum. It acts as a permanent repository for his many creations.

His life and art continue to be studied by many. Even after his death in 2014, museums like the Museum of Arts and Design in New York have hosted exhibitions of his work. His ability to blend the organic with the mechanical remains a landmark in modern art.
