Aliens is a celebrated 1986 science fiction-action film.

It serves as the sequel to the 1979 horror film Alien. James Cameron wrote and directed the movie. The film expanded the scope of the original story. It introduced new factions, such as the Colonial Marines. Many critics now consider it one of the greatest films of the 1980s. It is often ranked among the best science fiction and action sequels ever made.

The plot follows Ellen Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver. She is the sole survivor of an alien attack on her ship, the Nostromo.

After 57 years in stasis, she is found by a deep-space salvage crew. Ripley later joins a unit of Colonial Marines to investigate a human colony on the moon LV-426. Communications with this colony had been lost. The crew travels aboard a spaceship called the Sulaco.

Upon arrival, they find a battle-ravaged colony and dangerous alien creatures.

The story involves several distinct stages of conflict. First, the Marines discover the destroyed colony and two facehuggers in tanks. They find a young girl named Newt, the only surviving colonist. Next, the team enters a fusion-powered atmosphere processing station. Inside, they find aliens using cocooned colonists as incubators. The situation escalates into a violent ambush by adult aliens. Finally, Ripley must battle an alien queen to save Newt. She uses an exosuit cargo loader to defeat the creature.

Developing the film was a long and difficult process. It took many years to move from the first film to the sequel. This delay was caused by lawsuits and management changes at 20th Century Fox. The studio was initially unsure about the project's value.

James Cameron was hired to write the story in 1983. He wrote a 42-page treatment in only three days. He based the idea on the concept of "Ripley and soldiers." Cameron's reputation grew after the success of his film The Terminator.

Production of the film was quite tumultuous. It began principal photography in September 1985 and ended in January 1986. The movie was filmed mostly at Pinewood Studios.

There were many conflicts between Cameron and the British crew. These difficulties even affected the composer, James Horner. He was given very little time to record the film's music. The total budget for the production was approximately $18.5 million.

Aliens was a massive commercial success. It was released on July 18, 1986, to great critical acclaim. The film earned between $131.1 million and $183.3 million during its theatrical run. This made it one of the highest-grossing films of 1986 worldwide.

Sigourney Weaver received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. This was a significant achievement because the science-fiction genre was usually overlooked by award bodies.

The film's impact reaches far beyond the cinema. It inspired various merchandise, including toys, comic books, and video games. The franchise continued with several more installments. These include Alien 3 (1992) and Alien Resurrection (1997). Newer projects include the prequel Alien: Romulus (2024) and the TV series Alien: Earth (2025). The film remains a cornerstone of the science fiction and action genres.
