Released in 2009, it serves as the first entry in a large film series. The story is set in the mid-22nd century during a time of human colonization. Humans have traveled to Pandora, a lush and habitable moon in the Alpha Centauri star system. Their goal is to mine a highly valuable mineral known as unobtanium. This mining operation creates a deep conflict with the Na'vi, the indigenous humanoid species of Pandora. The Na'vi are blue-skinned and live in a state of harmony with their natural environment.

To interact with this alien world, scientists utilize a complex biological mechanism called an "avatar." An avatar is a genetically engineered Na'vi body designed for human use. These bodies are remotely operated by a human through a direct link to their brain. This process allows a human operator to control the hybrid body as if it were their own. The film follows Jake Sully, a paraplegic veteran of the United States Marines. Jake joins the Avatar Program to replace his deceased twin brother. He works under the direction of Dr. Grace Augustine, the head of the program.

The creation of Pandora involved many distinct stages of design and development. First, designers like Wayne Barlowe and Jordu Schell used paintings and physical sculptures to shape the Na'vi. James Cameron preferred these methods over early 3D renderings to capture his specific vision. Next, a linguist named Paul Frommer was hired to build a functional language. He created a lexicon of approximately 1,000 words for the Na'vi people. This language includes unique sounds called ejective consonants, similar to those in Amharic. Finally, the visual world was brought to life using groundbreaking motion capture techniques.

The history of the film's development spans many years of technological waiting. James Cameron began writing an 80-page treatment for the story in 1994. He originally planned to film it after his 1997 movie, Titanic. However, the technology required to achieve his vision did not exist in 1999. He had to wait for advancements in computer-generated imagery seen in other films. By 2005, Cameron produced a proof-of-concept clip to convince studio executives. After some financial negotiations with 20th Century Fox, principal photography finally began in February 2007.

Producing such a complex film required a massive financial investment. The official budget for Avatar was $237 million. However, some estimates suggest production costs were between $280 million and $310 million. The studio also spent approximately $150 million on promotion. Despite these high costs, the film became a historic commercial success. It became the first film to gross more than $2 billion at the box office. It also became the highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing Titanic. When adjusted for inflation, the film grossed around $4 billion. This makes it the second-highest-grossing film ever, trailing only Gone with the Wind from 1939.

There are several notable facts regarding the film's impact and reception. While critics praised the groundbreaking visual effects, some found the plot to be derivative. The film was highly recognized by the industry, earning nine nominations at the 82nd Academy Awards. It ultimately won three of those awards.

The film's success also had a surprising effect on consumer technology. It led to a surge in the popularity of 3D films in theaters. This popularity even prompted electronics manufacturers to release 3D televisions for home use.

Avatar has since grown into a broader cinematic universe. The story continues through several planned sequels. The first sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, was released in 2022. A third film, titled Avatar: Fire and Ash, is scheduled for 2025. More sequels are currently in development to expand the world of Pandora. This ongoing series continues to connect the themes of environmentalism and technology through its expanding narrative.
