Scott's filmmaking process often relies on creating detailed and memorable environments. He uses various settings to build his worlds. He has recreated 2nd-century Rome for the film Gladiator. He also depicted 12th-century Jerusalem in Kingdom of Heaven. His work includes medieval England in Robin Hood and ancient Memphis in Exodus: Gods and Kings. He has even filmed contemporary Mogadishu in Black Hawk Down. For science fiction, he built futuristic Los Angeles in Blade Runner and extraterrestrial worlds in Prometheus and The Martian.

His career began with design and television work. After studying at the Royal College of Art in London, he worked as a trainee set designer for the BBC. He worked on series like Z-Cars and the science fiction show Out of the Unknown. He was originally assigned to design the alien creatures for the second Doctor Who serial, The Daleks. In 1968, he and his brother Tony Scott founded Ridley Scott Associates (RSA). This company focused on film and commercial production. One famous project was a 1973 Hovis bread advertisement filmed in Gold Hill, Shaftesbury.

Despite his success, Scott has faced critical challenges. His 1982 film Blade Runner was a commercial disappointment in theaters. Some critics, like Pauline Kael, felt the film lacked a strong connection between words and movement. However, the movie is now widely regarded as a classic. Scott later supervised a digital restoration known as The Final Cut. He has earned many accolades for his persistence and skill. He has been nominated for three Academy Awards for Directing. He also won two Primetime Emmy Awards for television work.
