Her work spans many different styles of cinema, from intense thrillers to historical dramas. Bigelow is recognized for her ability to blend commercial filmmaking with complex philosophical ideas. She has achieved significant critical success throughout her career. Her accolades include two Academy Awards and two BAFTA Awards. She also received a Primetime Emmy Award for her documentary work. Her career is defined by a mastery of camera technology and a unique sense of cinematic pace.

Bigelow's journey into filmmaking began with a foundation in the visual arts. She first enrolled as a painting student at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1970. She later participated in the Whitney Museum of American Art's Independent Study Program in New York City. This program allowed her to study under notable artists like Brice Marden and Susan Sontag. In December 1972, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Following this, she moved to Columbia University to enter a graduate film program. There, she studied film theory and criticism, earning a master's degree. Her professors included influential figures such as Vito Acconci, Edward W. Said, and Andrew Sarris.

Her early career involved diverse experiences that shaped her professional skills. While living as an artist in New York, she worked on a real-estate venture with musician Philip Glass. They renovated distressed apartments in the downtown area to sell for a profit. Bigelow handled the installation of Sheetrock, while Glass managed the plumbing. Her transition to directing began with short films and collaborations. She co-directed her first feature film, the biker movie "The Loveless," in 1981 with Monty Montgomery. This film featured Willem Dafoe in his first starring role. She also experimented with the deconstruction of violence in her 20-minute short, "The Set-Up."

Between 1987 and 2002, Bigelow directed several films that established her reputation in Hollywood. She directed the thriller "Near Dark" in 1987, which began her interest in manipulating movie genres. This was followed by "Blue Steel" in 1990, a film about a rookie police officer. In 1991, she directed "Point Break," a film about an FBI agent posing as a surfer. "Point Break" became her most profitable studio film, earning approximately $80 million at the global box office. She also directed the film "Strange Days" in 1995 and the submarine drama "K-19: The Widowmaker" in 2002. These works showcased her ability to manage large-scale productions and intense action.

Bigelow reached a historic milestone in 2010 due to her work on the war drama "The Hurt Locker."

Set in post-invasion Iraq, the film received universal acclaim from critics. Because of this film, Bigelow became the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director. She was only the second American woman to ever be nominated for this honor. Her success continued with the 2012 film "Zero Dark Thirty," which dramatized the search for Osama bin Laden. This film led her to become the first woman to win the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Director twice.

In recent years, Bigelow has continued to explore significant historical and social themes. In 2017, she released "Detroit," a crime drama set during the 1967 Detroit riots. This film was a collaboration with writer Mark Boal. Beyond feature films, she has directed commercials for major brands such as Budweiser, AT&T, and the Army National Guard. Some of these commercials were broadcast during the Super Bowl. In 2022, she received a Directors Guild of America nomination for her commercial work on an Apple project.

Bigelow's career demonstrates a complex relationship with the film industry and gender roles. While she has achieved unprecedented success, she has often declined to label herself a "woman filmmaker" or a "feminist filmmaker." Her films are frequently analyzed for how they rework Hollywood conventions and address themes of violence and power. She continues to expand her reach into different media, including streaming platforms. In 2024, Netflix announced she would direct a new feature film titled "A House of Dynamite." This upcoming project focuses on officials managing an incoming missile attack.
