Stone was born in New York City on September 15, 1946. He was the only child of Louis and Jacqueline Stone. His father was a U.S. Army colonel and a Wall Street executive. His mother was French, which meant Stone spoke French as his first language. This bilingual background sometimes made learning English difficult during his school years. His father encouraged his writing by paying him a small amount each week. This early practice helped foster his passion for storytelling. He also had a very close bond with his nanny, Karlo Stojanac.

Stone's military service in the Vietnam War profoundly shaped his worldview.

He enlisted in the United States Army in 1967. He served in the 25th Infantry and the 1st Cavalry Divisions. During his service, Stone was wounded in action on two separate occasions. He was shot in the neck during a night ambush in October 1967. Later, a satchel charge explosion caused wounds to his legs and buttocks. For his bravery, he received the Bronze Star with a "V" Device for valor. He also earned the Purple Heart, which he received twice.

These combat experiences led to long-term physical and mental challenges. Stone suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder after returning from the war. He also experienced permanent hearing loss and tinnitus from a battlefield blast. He has noted that he felt a sense of isolation from others after the war. This feeling of being alienated influenced how he viewed both society and Hollywood. He used these difficult memories to fuel his creative work. His films often act as a way to process the trauma of war. This connection between his life and his art is very strong.

Stone began his professional career as a screenwriter before becoming a director. In 1979, he won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Midnight Express. He also wrote the scripts for films like Conan the Barbarian and Scarface. After establishing himself as a writer, he moved into directing major productions. He studied film at New York University. While there, he was taught by the famous director Martin Scorsese. This training helped him transition from writing scripts to managing entire film sets. His rise to prominence was marked by a series of successful and influential movies.

Today, Stone remains a significant and often controversial figure in the film industry.
